The Best Mortal Kombat Games

The Best Mortal Kombat Games

I have been a Mortal Kombat fan since the original game was released in arcades….. 25 years ago. Speaking of which just recently, Mortal Kombat celebrated its 25th birthday and just for fun I want to share with you my favorite games in the series.

Mortal Kombat (2011)

Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

This was a reboot of the series and I could not have been any more blown away. The violence, the brutality, the blood and the fighting were all kicked up a notch. When you see the fatalities here, it is hard to imagine people were so offended by Sub-Zero’s head rip fatality in the original Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat introduced a fantastic story mode which retold the events of the first three games. It was well written, let you play as a ton of characters and best of all it was genuinely interesting. This along with the challenge tower and the Krypt gave Mortal Kombat a ton of replay value. For me, this is the best entry in the series. Mortal Kombat X is fantastic, but I do feel that the short story mode compared to this one made it not quite as good.

Mortal Kombat II (1994)

SNES

Mortal Kombat II may have been ported to every system and computer under the sun, but it was the SNES version that I spent the most time with and for me was the best home version of the game by far. This time the SNES had all the gore and fatalities (which the first MK game on SNES left out) and what put it above the other versions was the sound and the graphics. No other home version of Mortal Kombat looked or sounded as good as this one. I was hooked! I played through it with every single character. Not just because the game was fun, but because by the time this second entry came around, Midway had really gone all in with the Mortal Kombat lore. Also, this had way more content than the first game. More characters, more secrets, more fatalities and of course Friendships and Babalities.

Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks (2005)

Xbox, PlayStation 2

I really wanted to include one of the spin off games and this one here is not only the best out of the spin offs (which is not saying much really as most of them sucked) but it is actually a game I had a lot of fun with. This was a retelling of the events of Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat 2, especially 2. It sees you playing as Lui Kang or Kung Lao and the game is very heavily story driven. This is like an old school beat em up. Think of something like Streets Of Rage or Final Fight, but in a 3D setting and you will have an idea of what to expect. The gameplay is a lot of fun and despite being an adventure game it still featured special moves and fatalities. I had so much fun with this game that I always wished we got a sequel or at least some kind of HD remake!
