The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

I have talked about my love for Life is Strange before, but today I want to give special attention to the free prequel to Life is Strange 2.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit was released last June. It was given away for free and actually, you can go and download it right now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and it will not cost you a penny. I actually have played through it on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

It is best described as an interactive story driven adventure game. It is like Life is Strange but on a much smaller scale. It is this smaller scale which I think really makes The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit have such an impact.

You play as a kid called Chris. Chris lives with his dad and Chris tries his best to live a normal life. This is hard for Chris to do as he is still dealing with the death of his mother. Chris as any child would took her death very hard, but his father took it even harder.

Chris uses his alter ego Captain Spirit as a way to escape his life. The gameplay is rather shallow and the goal is for Chris to find all the parts to make his costume, but that is not what this is about. It is about digging deeper and deeper into the relationship between Chris and this father.

Chris’s dad has a drinking problem. He also loses his temper and we know that something happened and he hurt Chris’s arm. The thing is, you can tell deep down that he is a good guy and that he loves Chris. You can certainly tell that Chris really does love his dad and so wants for him to be better and happy.

Chris’s dad though cannot stop drinking and he clearly cannot get over the loss of his wife. You just want him to get his crap together for his son. However the more you dig around the house, the more you see what kind of person Chris’s dad is and you do so wish that he could pull himself together and be the person he was before his wife died.

This is not a super happy game, but the writing is just amazing and I could honestly spend a whole 8 or more hours in this world with Chris trying his very best to help his dad and his dad hopefully overcoming his demons.

People will talk and talk about the three Life is Strange games, but I feel that The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit deserves just as much attention. If you have not played this, it is free so please go and give it a play, you will not be disappointed.
