Sonic The Hedgehog is having a great time in 2018. He is still riding off the success of last years, Sonic Mania. In a very short while we are getting an enhanced version called, Sonic Mania Plus. He is getting a brand new racing game, Team Sonic Mania and it looks like he will be going head to head with Jim Carey in his live-action movie.
Sonic Mania seemed to really get people once again excited about Sonic. I have been a long time Sonic fan, playing the first game on the Sega Mega Drive when it was first released in the early 90’s. My son is an even bigger Sonic fan than me so Sonic is a character that I have a lot of time for.
What bugs me is that when Sonic Mania was released I would hear time and time again about how Sonic is back and how there had been no good Sonic games since the Mega Drive days or that all the 3D Sonic games are garbage! I have to wonder if many of the people who make these claims actually kept up to date with the world of Sonic The Hedgehog video games or if they just paid attention to Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom?
The fact of the matter is that there have been some truly excellent Sonic games the last two decades. To start with the Game Boy Advance has the Sonic Advance trilogy, all of which are excellent 2D Sonic games and were doing what Sonic Mania is doing now, but they did it around a decade ago!
The Nintendo DS also has a great selection of Sonic games with Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure, and my personal favorite Sonic Chronicles. Sonic Chronicles is an excellent Sonic RPG that does not get the love that it deserves. Honestly, I feel that Sega need to get to work on a Sonic Collection that puts all of his Nintendo handheld games on one disc as there is some great stuff there.
I actually really liked Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 as well. With Sonic Adventure 2, in particular, leaving a long-lasting impression on me. I know that for people who just experience Sonic Adventure 2 for the first time in 2018 the game may seem really awkward, but back when it was first released it was excellent. The Game Cube version is even better than the one they released for Dreamcast.
While some people will just focus on Sonic 06. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 had some great Sonic games. Sonic Generations was an absolute blast to play through and the two Sonic Racing games I feel give Mario Kart a real run for its money as they are both a lot of fun. I actually even like Sonic Unleashed and think that was a really fun game.
However, as much as I have enjoyed the majority of Sonic games that have been released post Sega Mega Drive there is one that stands head and shoulders above the rest and that game is Sonic Colors on the Nintendo Wii. I swear if I could get any Sonic game remade into HD it would be Sonic Colors. The game already looks fantastic so I would love to see what it would look like in HD. It is the perfect mix of 2D Sonic and some 3D levels thrown in as well. Sega really stripped back the story for this one with fewer characters and I think that works to its advantage.
So while I already have Sonic Mania Plus pre-ordered and I plan on having it in the Sega Mega Drive style packaging. I want to tell you to not listen to people over the next couple of weeks when they tell you that Sonic Mania Plus is the only good Sonic game since his original four games as there have been some truly excellent Sonic action over the years. I am not saying all of the Sonic The Hedgehog games have been great, but there have been far more good ones than bad!
