My First Experience With Kingdom Hearts

My First Experience With Kingdom Hearts

While everyone is talking about Kingdom Hearts III right now and with good reason too. I wanted to take a trip back to the past and look at how this series captures my attention and why Kingdom Hearts III finally being here is such a big deal for me.

Back in 2002, I was well and truly in love with my PlayStation 2. The console was tremendous and the amount of time I put on my launch PlayStation 2 was just crazy. It was also sweet in that while I was at university during this time I also had a pretty well paying job as well. That meant I had a lot more disposable income.

I was and still am a huge fan of Square-Enix or as they were known back then, Square Soft. So when I heard that they were mixing Final Fantasy with Disney I was very intrigued. Back when this game was announced, people were actually making fun of it! Sure people act like they have been down since day one now and many of us where. However, I remember Nintendo, Xbox and Sega fans mocking PlayStation for their “kiddie” Disney game.

I was not put off and being from the UK I had to wait until November to play the game. When Kingdom Hearts was first released on the PlayStation 2 in the UK. I had a stroke of luck as I was full of cold and decided to not go to my classes that day. Of course, I was well enough to walk down to Gamestation to pick up my pre order of Kingdom Hearts.

The number of hours I spent that day with Kingdom Hearts was insane. Back then there was just this one game and while the story was complicated, back then it was not as convoluted as it would become. I was fully invested in the adventure that Sora was on and I was curious to see what Disney or Final Fantasy content I would come across next.

This first Kingdom Hearts game was a huge hit and for me, it is one of the defining games of the PlayStation 2. While I think the sequel is a far better game, the first Kingdom Hearts hits me in the nostalgia bone more than any other!
