Looking Back At The Dead Space Series

Looking Back At The Dead Space Series

As I write this if you are an Xbox Live Gold member you are able to download Dead Space 3 as part of your Games With Gold service. I have downloaded the game, but I actually already own it physically on the PlayStation 3. Actually, I own all three games on the PlayStation 3 and also Extraction on the Wii.

Today I want to talk about the Dead Space series. It is a fantastic series of games that got its start back in 2008 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. It is a survival horror/action game that sees you playing as an engineer on a spaceship called, Isaac Clarke. The spaceship has become infested by these creatures called Necromorphs and they come in all shapes and sizes. Now I have grossly oversimplified the story here. But the basics are you need to put a stop to these “aliens” all the while dealing with your own personal shit.

The story that runs through the Dead Space saga is one that I actually got heavily invested in. It is part horror and part sci-fi and it reminds me of things like the Aliens series, The Thing and even a little bit of John Carpenters Ghosts of Mars.

Gameplay wise, Dead Space is a 3rd person action/shooter. Part of what makes the game so much fun is that a bullet to the head is not enough to stop most of the Necromorphs. You need to dismember them! It is pretty gruesome stuff and Dead Space 2 and 3 would introduce even more grotesque enemies for you to face. Speaking of the sequels they took you to more interesting locations. The first game which was mostly set on the spaceship had a lot of atmosphere, but the sequels kicked things up several notches. The best comparison I think is that Dead Space one is like the first Alien movie and Dead Space 2 and 3 are like Aliens.

As well as the three main games there is Dead Space Extraction which is an on-rails shooter. When it comes to on-rails shooters I feel that Dead Space Extraction is the best that the Wii has to offer, even better than the two Resident Evil games. There is also a puzzle game called, Dead Space Ignition, but I never played that.

Dead Space as a series feels like it is dead which is a damn shame. The 3rd game was not as good as the other two and it had a forced co-op element to it which in all honesty did not hurt the game, but it was something that rubbed some people up the wrong way.

I would love for EA to make a Dead Space collection for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Maybe then we could get a Dead Space 4 or maybe even a reboot of the series. If you are an Xbox Live subscriber please make sure you check out Dead Space 3 while it is available for free.
