I have been gaming since the 80’s so virtual reality is something that has always interested me. I remember in the 90’s a couple of arcades had these huge VR setups that promised so much, but offered very little. Now though, virtual reality is actually a thing and it is a thing that can be done the way it was intended when it was first put into gaming over 20 years ago. Playstation VR is the most affordable way to do some console VR gaming, but after 6 months (give or take) is the Playstation VR worth it?
I was an early adopter to the PlayStation VR and while it is the most affordable VR headset, it is still the cheapest out of a bunch of expensive things so for some people it is just out of the question and I totally get that. The thing is, Playstation VR is awesome! It by far surpassed my expectations. But at the same time, it is very hard for me to justify spending over the price of a console on a VR headset. There are some great VR experiences on PlayStation VR, but I do not think there is enough to attract the casual gamer.
For me, the best two experiences I have had with PlayStation VR have been the Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission. Which was a free add on, but it was just so much fun. Standing under an AT-AT and actually feeling like you are in an X-Wing were things that 9 years old me would have flipped out over.
The other PlayStation VR experience that blew me away and the one that makes it easier to recommend a Playstation VR to someone is Resident Evil VII. Resident Evil VII was already a great game, but wow is the VR aspect of it incredible! It really does make you feel like you are in a horror movie and I would go as far to say that Resident Evil VII is better in VR than on your TV. It is an experience that has to be seen to be believed, it really is that incredible.
Which brings me onto my main point with Playstation VR and that is showing people how cool it is. The only way you can see just how immersive PlayStation VR is, is by trying it out and unless you have a buddy with one. Most likely you are going to have to pay a few bucks to play a demo at a game store. Which kind of sucks, I get it though, the store has to pay someone to stand and man the VR headset, but I know for some people there is no way in hell they are paying for a demo.
I have had a blast with my Playstation VR, but apart from Resident Evil VII, I have not come across that killer app that would make me say, you have to run out and buy one although with Doom VFR and Fallout and Skyrim it may be something to look for. Hold off as hopefully, this holiday season will see a bit of a price drop on the PlayStation VR.
