Nintendo Classics Mortal Kombat 4

Nintendo Classics Mortal Kombat 4

Now I am looking at one of my favorite games for the Nintendo 64, Mortal Kombat 4! This is a game that not many people talk about in terms of the Nintendo 64 and the Mortal Kombat series, but I have always had a soft spot for it.

I think part of the allure for me with Mortal Kombat 4 was that I never saw it in arcades. I actually grew up in an area that had two arcades and every other Mortal Kombat game showed up, heck even War Gods showed up! However, Mortal Kombat 4 never did so it was not until it came home on the Nintendo 64 that I got to play it.

I picked up Mortal Kombat 4 the day it was released and I remember the bus ride home was pretty brutal as I was very excited to play it. Some folks did not like the move away from digitized graphics, but I always liked the art style of Mortal Kombat 4. I also liked the introduction of Quan Chi and  Shinnok as the main villains for the game.

While you could sidestep and use weapons in Mortal Kombat 4, it still feels just like Mortal Kombat. Midway got rid of the friendships and silly moves and went back to a more violent take. Each character had two fatalities and there are some pretty memorable ones such as Quan Chi beating his opponent to death with their own leg and the way that Lui Kang would turn into a dragon and rag doll the defeated foe all over the screen.

While it is not looked back upon as fondly as the other MK games, Mortal Kombat 4 is a really fun game and by far the best one on one fighting game that the Nintendo 64 got.
