A list of Mario games that are bad? Well yes, that is what I am doing today. I love the Mario games. I would class it as one of my favorite series of video games. Still, Mario has appeared in some games that have not connected with me over the years and that is why today I am sharing with you what I consider to be the 7 worst Mario games.
Mario’s Time Machine
Ugh, what a waste! I rented this game back in the day and I thought it was going to be awesome. The graphics on the back of the box make it look like it is going to be similar to Super Mario World. However, this one promised time travel and time travel to me is awesome.
Well, it turns out that Mario’s Time Machine is one of those games that would try and trick kids into learning. While it may have a look that resembles Super Mario World, I can tell you that this game is nowhere close to that game. It is far more of a chore to play than words can do justice. You basically have to return artifacts to their rightful place in time after Bowser has stolen them. The concept is kind of interesting, but the execution flat out sucks.
Mario Party Advance
I love the Mario Party series and by the time this came out we had multiple Mario Party games for the Nintendo 64 and the Nintendo GameCube so hopes were high. Well anyone who has played this can tell you just how bad it is. It is like the most half-assed handheld port of a game you will ever see.
Mario Party has never really been a game of skill, but the level of luck to win in Mario Party Advance is insane! The single player mode is one of the most boring things that you will ever have the displeasure to sit through and then there is the presentation. It is crazy to think that a game released in 2005 could look so bad.
Mario Kart Wii
In multiplayer, Mario Kart Wii can be a lot of fun. However, in single player, Mario Kart Wii is the most frustrating game in the series. This is one of those games that I started off with and actually enjoyed. However the more I played it the more I began to hate the game and it got to a point where I would just flat out refuse to play it and unlock all of the characters.
Mario Kart Wii has the cheapest AI of any Mario Kart game. Rubberbanding in the Mario Kart series is something we are used to, but Mario Kart Wii takes it to a whole new level. No other game in the series punishes you for being good as much as this one done. It is not unusual to get hit with three or four Blue Shells in a single race. The worst thing you can do in this game is actually be in first place before the last half of the final lap!
This is a game that I have never owned, but as a kid, a buddy of mine had the CD-I and this was one of the games he had. Hotel Mario is a freaking weird game. The best thing about it is the animated intro. This is so bad that it is hilarious and actually worth checking out.
The actual gameplay of Hotel Mario though is so un-fun it makes it incredibly boring to play. The idea of the game is that Mario needs to shut all of the doors on each level. Goomba’s, Wrigglers and other Mario enemies keep coming out of the door and the level cannot end until Mario has shut them all. This can be fun for a short while, but I would say that it tends to be more boring and frustrating in the long run.
Super Mario Sunshine
Some raised eyebrows at this one no doubt. Let me start by saying that I love the presentation of Super Mario Sunshine. I like the story, the way it is voice acted, the graphics still look great and the music is fun, whimsical and fits the game perfectly. I even like the setting of Delfino Island. Super Mario Sunshine is a game I so want to like…… but I can’t.
Out of what I class as the “core” Mario games, Super Mario Sunshine is the worst. The controls suck. I know this may be a personal preference, but Mario feels way more twitchy in this game than any other adventure. Controlling him is a huge pain in the rear end. Then there is Fludd. I love the idea of Fludd, but again the controls are just not good enough for a Mario game. Of all the games on this list, Super Mario Sunshine is the one that I wish I could like and trust me I have tried time and time again to get into this game.
Mario Is Missing
Take everything that I said about Mario’s Time Machine and apply it here. I would say that Mario Is Missing is even worse than Mario’s Time Machine. I kind of dug the traveling through time aspect. Mario Is Missing though just has you going to different cities to find items that need to be returned to them. This somehow will help Luigi and Yoshi find Mario.
It is very, very boring and again it has a Super Mario World art style which when you look at the back of the box tricks you into thinking it could be decent. I get that this is an educational game, but did they have to make it so boring?
Now the arcade version of the original Mario Bros was a fun game, but the version I am talking about is the one that I had as a kid for the Atari 2600. That is right, Mario on the Atari 2600. Some people really like this port, but as a kid, this was a game that I really did not enjoy.
These days I can see the charm of Mario Bros and as I said in the arcade it was a game I kind of enjoyed. On the Atari 2600 though the controls feel stiff and it looks horrible! Mario Bros may be an arcade classic, but the Atari 2600 version sure as heck is not.
I love Super Mario and he has appeared in far more hits than misses, but these are the Mario games that I do not like. Are there any Mario games that you do not like or any that are on my list which you feel are a little harsh? If so let me know in the comments section down below.
