7 Scariest Video Games

As it is October there is no better time to look at scary video games! Horror games are one genre that has greatly benefitted as technology as gotten better as I personally feel that horror games today tend to be much scarier than those of past generations.

If you want to have some scary games to play this Halloween season then check out these seven games that scared the hell out of me!

Project Zero 2 (Fatal Frame 2)

The PlayStation 2 era had some very scary games, many of which relied on jump scares. Project Zero 2: Crimson Butterfly had plenty of those, but this one also had you on the edge of your seat the whole time as the entire game was creepy, unnerving and just downright scary. It is about these two Japanese twins who when in the forest one day, end up transported to an ancient Japanese village where something terrible happened many years ago. You need to find your sister, get out of the village and watch out for the ghosts!

This is one terrifying game and the gimmick is that you have the Camera Obscura which can see and capture ghosts. You can only see the ghosts with this, but you can “sense” them when they are near. It has a great story, it still looks good and it really is a scary game playing experience. I would say that this series of games has a style very similar to Japanese horror movies like The Ring and The Grudge.

This was a game that I got through PlayStation Plus and it scared the hell out of me! I was told that in Outlast you had three choices these were you can run, hide or die and that is it. the idea of the game is that you are an investigative journalist who has been sent to a mental asylum to see what exactly is going on there. You hear that there is some messed up stuff going on, but that is nothing compared to what you experience.

The inmates are running loose, but that is the least of your problem. There is far more going on in this mental asylum that you could have ever imagined. You have a video camera with you and this is your only source of light, but batteries are scarce. When you are being chased you cannot fight back. All you can do is run, hide and pray that they do not find you. It has a great story with a twist that I did not see coming. The tension level is certainly a 12/10 in this game!

Resident Evil VII

I am a huge fan of the Resident Evil series and I would put Resident Evil 4 as one of my top games of all time (1 or 2 actually). 4, 5 and 6 focused more on action, but Resident Evil VII takes things back to the series roots and it is all about horror. Your girlfriend is missing and you fear the worst until you get a strange message telling you that she is being held captive.

You go to investigate and come across a messed up house with an even more messed up family. You go there to save your girlfriend, but that really is the least of your worries. Resident Evil VII is a terrifying game. It still has some action, but for the most part, you will be running away and avoiding enemies. I had a lot of fun with this one and I am very excited to see what comes next with Resident Evil VIII. One other thing to mention is that if you have PlayStation VR this has a VR mode and it is absolutely pants pooping scary.

Silent Hill 2

The first Silent Hill game was good, but it is Silent Hill 2 that has stuck with me for all these years. You get a message from your dead wife that she is waiting for you in Silent Hill. This is a very hard game for me to talk about as I am so scared…. Ok, so that is not the real reason. The real reason is that this is such a great story that I do not want to spoil it for you. There are so many twists and turns and things that make you question your character's sanity that you are never really sure what the hell is going on.

The gameplay may have not aged like a fine wine, but I still think that Silent Hill 2 is well worth a play through. You can get this on PlayStation 2 for dirt cheap, but there is also an enhanced version on the original Xbox as well as an HD version for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. If you love your games to have a creepy story, Silent Hill 2 is perfect for you.

Until Dawn

I have spoken about Until Dawn on here a few times now. It is one of the best PlayStation 4 exclusives and it is a horror game that I really do like. I would compare this to a horror movie like I Know What You Did Last Summer or Scream. In the game, you get to play as many different characters so you experience the story from all kinds of viewpoints. A group of friends is staying in a fancy cabin in the snowy mountains on the anniversary of the deaths of two of their friends. Well, strange things start happening and what starts as a slasher movie kind of story takes a paranormal kind of turn.

In case you have not figured it out, I freaking love Until Dawn! Playing as different characters is great, but what makes it so great is that you will have choices to make. Choices in dialogue and actions and what you do will affect the story. As a matter of fact, there are different endings depending on what you do. If you have a PS4 this is a game that has to be in your collection.

Dead Space

The whole Dead Space series is one that I really like. I would say that the Dead Space series is like the first two Alien movies. The first one is a horror and then the second one is more action based. The first Dead Space is creepy, scary and it has you on the edge of your seat the whole time that you play it. I do not know if I would say it is the best of the trilogy, but it is certainly the most horror inspired.

You play as an engineer called Isaac who is on a space station that is being overrun by these horrific looking creatures called Necromorphs. You never know when these things will show up and you have to dismember them to put them down for good. This adds to the challenge and when there are more than one on your tail it makes taking them down even scarier.

Last, but by no means least we have a game that I was lucky enough to download when it was available and I did not delete it! P.T was the “playable teaser” for the new Konami Silent Hill game which would eventually get canned. P.T sees you waking up in a room with no idea who you are, where you are or what you need to do. You walk through the house and weird and terrifying stuff happens.

There are things that you have to do and figuring these out is what the game is about. The thing is you are always scared to look in a room, click on something or even just move forward because you never know what the hell is going to jump out at you. Even if you do not have the means to play P.T. I highly recommend you at the very least go and check out a YouTube video of it.
