30 Years Of Double Dragon

30 Years Of Double Dragon

I was recently made aware that this year of 2017 is the 30th anniversary of the game Double Dragon! That is crazy as it means that I have been playing this game for around 30 years and it also means that I am old as hell! Anyway, to celebrate 30 years of Double Dragon, I wanted to share a few personal memories of the game.

My first experience of Double Dragon would have been around 87 or 88. I was on vacation with my family and the hotel we were staying in had a small arcade. They had around 8 machines, but these 8 machines were awesome and allowed me to avoid having to spend time with my sister.

This was my first introduction to the world of Double Dragon. What made this so cool was that there was this other kid about my age. The two of us would play Double Dragon together every day….. never actually talking to each other or even asking each other’s names. We would just play the game when one of us would die and run out of money a simple “see you later” was all that was said. It was a very weird kind of friendship/relationship to have. But me and this kid played Double Dragon for four days straight and we actually beat the game twice. I still sometimes wonder what the hell that kids name was!

Double Dragon is also a game I have a lot of experience with on the home console. I had the NES port of the game, but this was one of those games that it seemed like every single kid in the town had. This is no exaggeration, but in the late 80’s early 90’s I played Double Dragon on Sega Master System, Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64 and even the ZX Spectrum! That was how many other kids I knew had this game. It was everywhere during this time. While I enjoyed the NES version, none of them really brought the arcade version home with the Sega Master System being the most disappointing. It may have been two players, but it played horrible. Still, that did not stop me and my buddy Thomas putting the work in and beating that game!

Double Dragon is such an influential game. If not for that, I doubt we would have games like Final Fight, Streets Of Rage and even Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! I would love to know what some of your guy's experiences with Double Dragon are.
